Note from the Director
Believe it or not, spring is just around the corner, and with it comes the arrival of kitten season. For those of us in the rescue world, this time of year brings a mix of excitement and challenge—the joy of saving tiny lives, but also the overwhelming demand for resources and care.

What is Kitten Season?
Kitten season refers to the time of year—typically spring through early fall—when unspayed female cats give birth to litters of kittens. Warmer weather triggers a rise in feline breeding, leading to an explosion of tiny, vulnerable kittens needing care.
Unfortunately, many of these kittens are born to stray or feral cats, meaning they may face hunger, illness, and predators unless rescued.
Kitten Season is a Challenge—But We Can Make a Difference!
Every kitten saved is a life changed, and with your help, we can make this kitten season one of hope and new beginnings. Whether you foster, donate, adopt, or simply spread the word, you’re making a difference for cats in need.
Want to get involved? Visit us at Catty Shack Rescue to learn more about fostering, donating, or adopting!

Together, we can turn kitten season into rescue season!

MARCH SPOTLIGHT: BARNUM
Meet Barnum!
Barnum is a medium-haired male kitten, born on [DATE], alongside his brother and sister—both of whom have already found their forever homes. Now, it’s Barnum’s turn!
“The Big Mellow” is the perfect way to describe this sweet boy. He’s just as happy lounging in a sunny spot as he is chasing a toy. Barnum adores brushing sessions, greeting each stroke with purrs and headbutts—he’ll happily let you keep going as long as you’re willing!
A true loyal companion, Barnum loves to sit on your lap for pets and attention. But don’t be fooled by his relaxed nature—dangle a string in front of him, and you might be surprised by his playful, quick reflexes!
If you’re looking for a calm, affectionate cat who will brighten every day with his gentle presence, Barnum might be the perfect match for you.
Yavapai County residents only, please.
Adopters born in 1957 or earlier are kindly asked not to apply for kittens.

Rescue Story

3 Cuties from South of the Border
A few weeks ago, one of our dedicated fosters took in three adorable kittens who were rescued from Mexico. These little travelers have already come a long way, and they are adjusting so well to their new life in Arizona.
At first, they were a bit shy, unsure of their surroundings after such a big journey. But with lots of love, patience, and plenty of treats, they are blossoming into playful, affectionate kittens.
These sweet kittens will be ready for adoption in the near future, and we can’t wait to find them the loving homes they deserve. Stay tuned for updates as they continue to grow and thrive!
Dental Care for Cats
Do You know The Importance of Dental Care for Your Cat?
When we think about keeping our cats healthy, we often focus on their diet, exercise, and regular vet visits—but what about their teeth? Dental health is just as important for cats as it is for humans, yet it’s one of the most overlooked aspects of feline care. Poor dental hygiene can lead to painful infections, difficulty eating, and even serious health complications. Here’s what you need to know about keeping your cat’s teeth in top shape!
Routine Dental Care for Cats
Preventative care is the best way to avoid painful and costly dental issues. Here’s how you can keep your cat’s teeth healthy:
Regular Brushing – Using a cat-specific toothbrush and toothpaste (never human toothpaste), aim to brush your cat’s teeth a few times a week. Start slow and reward them with treats to make it a positive experience.
Dental Treats & Chews – Special treats and dental chews can help reduce plaque buildup between brushings.
Dental Diets – Some prescription cat foods are designed to help clean teeth while chewing. Ask your vet if this is right for your cat.
Annual Vet Checkups – A professional dental exam during your cat’s routine vet visit can catch problems early. Some cats may require professional cleanings under anesthesia.

Signs of Dental Problems in Cats
Because cats are experts at hiding pain, dental issues can go unnoticed until they become severe. Watch for these warning signs:
Bad breath – A strong odor can be a sign of infection or decay.
Drooling or pawing at the mouth – Cats experiencing pain may excessively drool or rub their face.
Difficulty eating or chewing on one side – If your cat avoids dry food or favors one side of their mouth, it could indicate pain.
Red, swollen, or bleeding gums – Visible signs of gum disease or irritation.
Loose or missing teeth – Advanced dental disease can cause teeth to fall out.
Weight loss – If a cat stops eating due to mouth pain, they may lose weight rapidly.
If you notice any of these symptoms, a veterinary dental exam is essential.
Common Dental Issues in Cats
Cats are prone to several dental problems, including:
Gingivitis – Inflammation of the gums, often caused by plaque buildup. Signs include red, swollen gums and bad breath.
Periodontal Disease – If gingivitis is left untreated, it can lead to infections, gum recession, and even tooth loss.
Tooth Resorption – A painful condition where a cat’s body starts breaking down its own tooth, often leading to missing teeth over time.
Stomatitis – A severe inflammation in the mouth, possibly linked to immune system issues, making eating incredibly painful.
Tartar & Plaque Buildup – Just like in humans, plaque hardens into tartar, leading to decay and gum disease.

WELCOME TO KITTY CORNER
The place to find resources on adoption, fostering and how to care for your cat and kittens.
In light of the oncoming ‘kitten season’ here is a reminder of what to do should you find a stray kitten.
Found a Stray Kitten? Here’s What to Do
Discovering a stray kitten can be both heartwarming and challenging. Here’s a concise guide to ensure the kitten’s well-being:
Observe Before Acting: The mother cat might be nearby. Unless the kitten is in immediate danger, monitor from a distance for several hours to see if she returns.
Assess the Kitten’s Condition:
Immediate Intervention: If the kitten appears sick, injured, or is in a hazardous location, gently move it to a safe, warm place.

Healthy Appearance: A clean and quiet kitten is likely under maternal care.
Provide Care If Necessary:
Warmth: Keep the kitten in a cozy environment.
Feeding: For kittens under four weeks, bottle-feed with kitten formula. Older kittens can consume wet kitten food.
Seek Professional Assistance: Contact local animal shelters or rescue groups for guidance and support.
Plan for the Future: If you intend to keep the kitten, arrange for veterinary care, vaccinations, and spaying or neutering to promote a healthy life.
For more information, visit the ASPCA’s guide on found kittens.
Remember, patience and careful observation are key to ensuring the best outcome for stray kittens.
